| Through Step Up to Excellence, Piecework Partners works to connect students with opportunities for personal development that will enrich their own lives and their communities. Our students are vibrant, contributing members of their families, schools, neighborhoods, cities and Step Up communities. Their experiences in these environments and in the wider world strengthen their personal and leadership abilities while also enhancing their home communities.
Step Up students in each school form a community of peers. They are active in academic and extra-curricular pursuits within their high schools and in volunteer and civic endeavors within their communities. Each student contributes a minimum of 90 hours of service to the communities in which they live. Their experiential knowledge then becomes not only a part of capabilities but also of the people around them. They then expand their roles as students, part-time employess and as contributing members of their families.
Where We Operate

Step Up to Excellence, in partnerships with cooperating school districts, operates in four Massachusetts communities: Clinton, Fitchburg, Framingham, and Stoughton.
Each of our students is required to provide 90 hours of service to the community in order both to contribute to the community and to develop leaderships skills based on civic responsibilities. If you have a project in your community and need volunteers, please contact us.
If you provide a service or are conducting an event to enhance one of these communities, you can contact Carolyn Birmingham or the school director to see if your project can be matched with any of our student volunteers.
We also hope our students will learn much about their communities by participating in job-shadowing or internships with local businesses and organizations. If you have such an opportunity, please contact us.
In addition, to academics, extracurricular activities, and community service, most of our students also need to hold part-time jobs. If you have opportunities for part-time employment for students, you can contact the local director of Step Up:
