Mission Statement

Step Up to Excellence helps students find a place in the world. We offer support and experiences designed to broaden students’ horizons. We help students disassemble falsely established limitations and grasp previously unattainable goals. Step Up utilizes “natural mentors”, educators who are selected from the students own schools. The mentors then create a smaller learning community that motivates and supports students. We offer individually tailored opportunities to develop student potential over a three year period. By the end of that time period we expect students to step up to responsibilities with increased confidence and character, leadership.

As Step Up enters its tenth year of operation, the students continue to amaze us with their strength and with the accomplishments They succeed despite facing many obstacles. The relationships they develop with their mentors have proven invaluable, as mentor-student relationships remain the cornerstone of the program and the bases for excellence.

Step Up to Excellence is a very important part of my life. The most important part of step up to me is my mentor. My mentor keeps me in line, makes sure I’m doing what needs to be done, and also believes in me 100% and is confident in what I do. My mentor is like my second parent who is making sure I’m doing what’s best for myself and won’t end up doing anything to ruin my life, the only difference is he’s in school and my parents are at home. If I didn’t have a mentor for this program, I probably wouldn’t try hard to succeed in this program because I would have no one to make sure I’m doing what’s suppose to be done.
